Scott Craven Mentoring Program News!
Our Scott Craven Mentoring Program sponsored twenty-five SM students in the annual "Shop with a Cop" program at Wal-Mart, which took place in December. These deserving students, who were selected by faculty and staff, were each given a $100 gift card by the mentoring program, which they used to buy essential items such as shoes and clothing as well as fun items like toys and games. They were accompanied on their shopping trip by military personnel and correctional officers who participate in the mentoring program. Everyone met at Sallas Mahone and traveled together to Wal-mart, where they were greeted by friendly employees. Following the shopping outing, Wal-mart provided a pizza party for all participants, and Santa Claus came to visit to share in the fun! Our students participated alongside 20 other students from the community and local police officers. The event was covered by the Valdosta Daily Times, Moody newspaper, and the Moody Public Affairs department.
The Scott Craven mentoring program recently provided SM with six sturdy picnic tables, which were placed in a courtyard area near the lunchroom. The "Scott Craven Café" will be used by our mentors to tutor and to eat lunch with their buddies and by our teachers as a lunch and/or outdoor classroom area. What a nice addition to our school-especially during this time of year when the weather is cooler! And what a wonderful way to remember a special mentor.
